HIGH ADVENTURES
In order to develop character, citizenship, and personal fitness, young people need the opportunity to push past their comfort zones in real world settings that help them understand who they are and envision who they can become. High adventure programs provide crucial experiences that help young people clarify their values, goals and vision for the future.
SEA BASE
Sea base - BAHAMAS
Sea Base is offering an exciting adventure based in Marsh Harbour on Great Abaco Island. Your crew can snorkel the beautiful, pristine reefs surrounding Marsh Harbour, wade ashore on the many small cays (pronounced keys) in the area, learn their unique history, and fish for the game-fish which are abundant in the Abacos. You’ll board traditional Bahamas sailing vessels designed to take you to such exotic places as Green Turtle Cay, Hopetown and Little Harbour. There’s plenty of time for fishing, snorkeling and swimming. Steady breezes, the protection of the barrier islands and the reef surrounding Abaco Sound provide perfect sailing getaways. This adventure can accommodate crews of 6-8 or 10-12 based on availability. This is a six-night, seven-day adventure.
Troop 380 has participated in Seabase Bahamas Sailing Expedition since 1994.
SEA BASE - ST. THOMAS
Experience the allure of the U.S. Virgin Islands. Here, the trade winds blow, offering some of the best sailing in the world. Upon arrival, your crew will board a 40-foot plus vessel with an experienced captain. Most units attain the 50 Miler Award as they circumnavigate the crystal blue waters surrounding the island of St. John. In addition to sailing, your unit will snorkel pristine coral reefs, hike in Virgin Islands National Park, swim ashore to incredible beaches, and more!
This is a six-night, seven-day adventure.
Troop 380 has participated in Seabase US Virgin Islands Sailing Expedition since 2020.
Northern Tier
Ely, MN– Charles L. Sommers Canoe Base
The flagship base of Northern Tier, the Charles L. Sommers Canoe Base has hosted Boy Scout canoe expeditions on the shores of Moose Lake since 1941. Located twenty miles outside of the town of Ely, MN, the Sommers Base outfits over 4,000 Scouts each year on wilderness canoe trips in the Boundary Waters Canoe Area Wilderness (BWCAW) in Minnesota and the Quetico Provincial Park in Ontario. Trips out of the Sommers base are limited to 8 total participants plus an Interpreter.
Troop 380 has participated in Northern Tier Summer Canoe Expedition since 1980.
Atikokan, ON – Donald Rogert Canoe Base
Located an 80-mile paddle North of the Sommers base, the Donald Rogert (“Atikokan”) Canoe Base outfits 1500 scouts each year for expeditions into the Northern regions of the Quetico Provincial Park as well as into the Canadian Crown Lands, including the Turtle River – White Otter Lake Provincial Park.
The Quetico is a gorgeous and pure wilderness, with traces of human travel; the Crown Lands region features the remains of a used wilderness – trappers cabins, age-old gold mines and even the remains of a World War II Prisoner of War camp can be found amidst the beautiful wilds of the Canadian Shield (a vast geological shield covered by a thin layer of soil). Crew sizes may be up to 11 participants plus an Interpreter if traveling in the Crown Land and 8 participants plus an interpreter if traveling in the Quetico.
Philmont
12-Day Treks
As the traditional backpacking trek at Philmont, 12-day treks give crews the opportunity to hike for 10 days in the backcountry, with an arrival/departure day in Base Camp on each end of the journey. Crews will be welcomed and accompanied by a Philmont Ranger for their first 3 days and will participate in program activities throughout their trek. 12-day crews cover 50-120 miles over the course of their trek, and also complete the 3 hours of conservation work necessary to earn the Philmont Arrowhead Patch.
Troop 380 has participated in Philmont 12-day treks since 1978.
Troop 380 had recently participated in Philmont 12-day trek in 2012, 2014 (two treks), 2016 (two treks), 2021 and 2023.
